How to disinfect and clean pillows and bedding?

Oct 14, 2023

This season is hot and cold, which is the season when colds are more common. It is also the season when various bacteria and viruses breed actively. Mites and bacteria on bedding often trigger respiratory diseases or make colds recurring for a long time. How should pillows and sheets be disinfected and cleaned at this time? How can we have a healthy living environment?

Disinfection and cleaning of pillows

high-temperature sterilization

First, prepare a large black plastic bag and put the pillow cover in it. Choose a sunny location and place the pillow in the sun for 2 hours. Black plastic bags absorb heat and kill mites and bacteria on pillows. Taking out the pillow after 2 hours, not only the mites and bacteria were eliminated, but also the warm sun fragrance~

low-temperature sterilization

The first step is to put the pillow into a black plastic bag. Put it in the refrigerator for 24 hours and take it out, your pillow will be clean!

How to clean various stains on bedding

1. Sweat stains

Items: Ammonia (available in pharmacies or chemical supply stores), winter melon, salt water

Washing method: Place the fabric in 3~5% cold salt water, soak it for 1~2 hours, and rinse with clean water. Mash the winter melon into puree, pour it into a cloth bag, squeeze out the juice, wash the sweat-stained fabric, and rinse with clean water. Add a few drops of ammonia to clean water and rinse the fabric thoroughly to solve the problem.

2. Blood stains

Items: Ginger or white radish juice sulfur soap or hydrogen peroxide

Washing method: Apply hydrogen peroxide to the blood-stained area, or wash with white radish juice to remove the blood stain immediately. If there are old blood stains, you can rub them with sulfur soap and clean them. Remember, blood contains protein, and protein is not easily dissolved when exposed to heat. Therefore, hot water cannot be used to remove blood stains.

3. Mildew

Items: mung bean sprouts, alcohol, citric acid, soap solution

Washing method: Place the mung bean sprouts on the mold spots and rub them vigorously with both hands. Use a brush to clean the mold spots after exposure. Silk can be washed with citric acid and rinsed with cold water; it can also be soaked in rice water overnight to effectively remove it. For more stubborn mold spots, you can apply a 5% alcohol solution and scrub several times.

4. Lipstick

Items: gasoline, soda (available in major supermarkets), alcohol

Washing method: Pour some alcohol on the fabric with lipstick, rub it vigorously, and wash it in clean water. If the lipstick mark is very dark, use a small brush dipped in gasoline to gently scrub it, and then use warm water + detergent to remove it. If you don't have gasoline, you can also use soda water, pour it on a clean cloth, and dab it on the stained area.

5. Weird smell

Items: White vinegar mixed with water, gold spinning

Washing method: The bedding will have an unpleasant sweaty smell due to improper drying. Mix white vinegar and water, soak the smelly clothes for about five minutes, and then dry the bedding in a ventilated place! You can also dry the bedding. Wash it in the washing machine and add gold spinning, and the strange smell will disappear.

6. Yellowing (3 methods)

Method 1: Rice water + orange peel

Washing method: Keep the rice water left after washing the rice, throw a few pieces of orange peel into it, then pour it into the pot and add water to cook. After boiling, put the yellowed pillowcases, sheets, etc. into it, soak it, and scrub it, and it won't take long to turn it back to white.

Method 2: lemon juice

Washing method: Lemon juice is alkaline and sweat stains are acidic. Neutralize the acid and alkali to remove yellow. Therefore, when washing pillowcases and sheets, you can add some lemon juice to the water to remove the yellow marks.

Method 3: baking soda + dish soap

Washing method: Soak yellowed bedding in it and scrub it to restore whiteness easily. If you want to wash your pillows in a washing machine, you can add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid and wash them in the standard mode. You will no longer have to worry about your pillows turning yellow!

Spring is the season when respiratory infectious diseases occur frequently. These infectious diseases can be spread through the air, short-distance droplet contact with respiratory secretions, etc. Places with densely populated areas and poor air circulation are more likely to spread once the virus appears. Therefore, the home environment must open windows for natural ventilation to effectively reduce the number of microorganisms in the indoor air and improve indoor air quality. In addition, green plants can help purify the air, filter and absorb radioactive substances, and eliminate noise in the living environment.
